Snow squalls close road, schools in Huron County

snowyroad2013Environment Canada continues its snow squall warning for Huron County today.

Cold, strong northwest winds over Lake Huron and Georgian Bay are generating local snow squalls. The strongest snow squalls are capable of producing visibilities near zero in bursts of heavy snow and local blowing snow as well as snowfall rates of 1 to 3 cm per hour. Additional snowfall amounts of up to 10 cm are possible under the heaviest bands.

According to the Ministry of Transportation’s website, Hwy. 21 between Amberley and Goderich is closed this morning due to zero visibility. Motorists should be prepared for poor winter driving conditions as sudden reductions to visibility are possible in heavy snow and blowing snow.

Schools around the area are reporting the following this morning:

  • Clinton PS is open for those who can get there safely but buses are cancelled;
  • St Anne’s and St Joseph’s in Clinton are closed and buses are cancelled.
Exams at St Anne’s have been postponed by one day;
  • Huron Christian in Clinton School is closed;
  • Huron Centennial PS is closed and buses are cancelled;
  • Hullett PS is closed and buses are cancelled.
Band practice also cancelled;
  • Holmesville PS is closed and buses are cancelled;
  • Central Huron SS buses are cancelled but school is open for study purposes;
  • Seaforth PS and St. James in Seaforth are open and buses are running as usual;
  • In Goderich and Area, all rural buses and all specialized transportation vehicles have been cancelled;
  • Colborne PS will remain open for students that can arrive safely;
  • Goderich Public School, St. Mary’s School and GDCI – 7/8 Program – In town buses are running and the schools will remain open for students that can arrive safely;
  • Goderich District Collegiate Institute – The school will remain open for study purposes only;
  • In the North Huron Region, all Montgomery school buses and all specialized transportation vehicles have been cancelled;
  • Brookside PS is closed;
  • Sacred Heart School (Wingham) is closed;
  • Maitland River Elementary School (Wingham and Turnberry Campuses) is closed; and
  • FE Madill School (7-12) will remain open for study purposes only. No regular classes for students.
