OPP called in to deal with suspicious package left by mailbox

oppplogoUPDATED: ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH – The OPP’s explosive disposal unit was called in after a “homemade crude device” bound in black electrical tape was found beside a rural mailbox north of Goderich recently.

Huron OPP believe the device was placed beside the mailbox sometime between 3 p.m. on Jan. 12, 2013 and 10 a.m. on Jan. 13, 2013, according to a press release issued today. The owner called police Jan. 13, and the explosive disposal unit was dispatched from London’s West Region Headquarters.

“We’re reluctant to describe in further detail what the package consisted of because we don’t want to spur any copycat incidents,” said Const. Jamie Stanley, of the Huron County OPP. “The package had the potential to cause injury.”

Stanley could not confirm how the package was dismantled.

“It’s an isolated incident. We haven’t had any reports throughout the county,” he said.

A stop sign removed from the intersection of Hawkins Road and Prosperity Line was also located at the end of the laneway.

Police advise the public not to touch a suspicious package and call 9-1-1 as soon as possible.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact the Huron County OPP Crime Unit at 1-888-310-1122 or (519) 524-8314.

Should you wish to remain anonymous, you may call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible to receive a cash reward of up to $2,000.
