Habitat for Humanity invites community to celebrate at gala Dec. 20

GODERICH – Habitat for Humanity Huron County (HFH HC) is inviting the community to help it celebrate Dec. 20.

During a wine and cheese gala event hosted at Elizabeth’s Art Gallery in Goderich, it will celebrate selection of the Partner Family for the Habitat house that will be built on Tilt Street, Goderich in 2013. Carmen and Jason Geldhof and their three children will partner with HFH HC to help build their new home, the organization dedicated to improving the lives of economically disadvantaged persons through home ownership announced today.

Co-chairs of the women’s build, Jane Egan and Les Cudmore, and board chair Arnold Mathers will be there to answer questions.

The family will now have to complete 500 hours of sweat equity before they can officially become homeowners. This may be accomplished by helping with the house build, working in the ReStore or through community service projects. Partner Families are selected by a family selection committee and recommended to the board of directors for approval.

This is the ninth build in Huron County.

HFH HC hopes to also be celebrating a sponsored build, courtesy of The Brick. At the Dec. 15 cutoff for on-line voting in Build It With the Brick competition, it led the way in votes. According to the most recent numbers available, 28.56 per cent of the community has cast a vote for the town, ranking it in top place, with Owen Sound following at 20.3 per cent.

An official announcement will be made Dec. 20, a representative at The Brick head office has confirmed.

The Christmas Gala Fund-raising event, with live music, will be held at Elizabeth’s Art Gallery on Thursday Dec. 20, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tickets, $20, are available at the ReStore in Goderich, Elizabeth’s Art Gallery or by calling the HFH HC office 519-612-1614.
