Weekend roundup: What to do in Huron County

HURON COUNTY – This weekend is a blend of celebration, whether it’s to celebrate the arrival of trees in Goderich or of Santa in Bayfield, and Remembrance Day events across Huron County.

Here’s a sampling of events:

Friday

Christmas in Bayfield, Bayfield

Date: Friday, Nov. 9 to Sunday, Nov. 11

Location: Various locations

Description: Friday – Lighting of the Lights ceremony in Clan Gregor Square, starting at 7 p.m. There will be a choir, treats, and Santa’s arrival aboard the fire truck. Shopping until 9 p.m. Saturday – Parade at 11 a.m. Shopping and dining. Fill out ballots for prizes from Bayfield Chamber of Commerce. Free horse drawn carriage rides. Sunday – Free carriage rides.

Reading by Author Susan Swan, Bayfield

Date: Friday, Nov. 9, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Location: The Village Bookshop, 20A Catherine St.

Description: Author Susan Swan will be reading from her latest novel, The Western Light. The novel shares a heroine with her international bestseller, The Wives of Bath. Swan is a journalist, feminist, novelist, activist and teacher whose critically acclaimed fiction has been published in 20 countries. The event is free and refreshments will be served.

Time Treasure and Talent Auction, Brussels

Date: Friday Nov. 9 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Live auction at 1:30 p.m.

Location: Melville Presbyterian Church, 55 Dunedin Dr.

Description: A wide variety of items, including antiques, collectibles, items for the home, garden and office, as well as a myriad of goods and services. Preview and silent auction leading up to live auction. Lunch available Saturday.

Saturday

Parade of Trees, Goderich

Date: Saturday, Nov. 10, starting at 10 a.m.

Location: Parade down Kingston Street, around The Square to planting site at the West Quadrant

Description: Come watch the arrival of five flatbeds of trees, some with diameters as 16 inches, which will be planted in the Court House Park to replace those lost in the tornado of 2011. They will be escorted by police, fire and hydro trucks. A mass photo will take place at 10:30 a.m.

IODE Maple Leaf Chapter’s Christmas Home Tour, Goderich

Date: Saturday, Nov. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 11, from noon to 4 p.m.

Location: Five homes in Goderich

Description: Get ideas for Christmas decorating during a tour of homes that display merchandise of local businesses. Tickets, $15, are available at Goderich Tourism Office, All Around the House, Fincher’s, Luann’s Flowers and Gifts or and IODE member. Refreshments follow the tour at the Goderich branch library, 52 Montreal St.

Open House at Huron County Museum, Goderich

Date: Saturday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Location: Huron County Museum, 110 North St.

Description: Free admission to the museum, including its military gallery with artifacts from WWI, WWII, army, navy and air forces. It also includes artifacts from the collection of Eugene McGee, all of which are related to the Air Navigation School No. 31 in Port Albert.

Memories of Dennis Fincher, Goderich

Date: Saturday, Nov. 10, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: Huron County Museum, Theatre, 110 North St.

Description: Mary Fincher will pay tribute to her grandfather and other war veterans, with a slide show and photo albums of Dennis Fincher during his military days at the Air Navigation School No. 31 in Port Albert. The boy from Coventry, England would eventually make his home in Goderich, opening Fincher’s on The Square.

Kintail School Flea Market, Kintail

Date: Saturday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: Hwy. 21 north of Kintail on west side of road

Description: Browse through a vast array of treasures in the unique setting of former school SS#3 Ashfield. Enjoy a taste of good country-style cooking in the kitchen.

SUNDAY

Remembrance Day Service, Exeter

Date: Sunday, Nov. 11, starting at 9:45 p.m.

Location: Cenotaph at town hall

Description: March from the legion to the cenotaph

10 a.m. – Legion Service and laying of wreath. 10.30 a.m. – Ecumenical service at Trivitt Memorial Anglican Church. 2 p.m. – Roast beef dinner at R E Pooley Branch 167. Entertainment prior to dinner by Exeter Community Band. Guest speaker: Jim Rutledge. Dinner tickets, $12. Contact Marian 519-235-4156 or Bart 519-235-1298 or Legion canteen.

Remembrance Day Cenotaph Service, Goderich

Date: Sunday, Nov. 11, from 10:40 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.

Location: Court House Park, at the Cenotaph

Description: The parade will leave the Legion at approximately 10:40 a.m. and go directly to the Cenotaph for the service, which begins at 10:55 a.m. In case of inclement weather, the service will take place at St. George’s Anglican Church.

Remembrance Day Banquet, Wingham

Date: Sunday, Nov. 11, starting at 6 p.m.

Location: Royal Canadian Legion Branch 180, 183 Victoria St. W.

Description: Roast beef dinner and guest speaker. Tickets, $15, can be purchased from legion executive or downstairs at the Legion. Banquet is open to everyone.
