Huron County on hunt for new clerk

HEATHER BOA Bullet News HURON COUNTY – The search for a new county clerk will begin now, rather than waiting for a new chief administrative officer to build a team, Huron County Council decided yesterday.

“I’m struggling with my concern about the amount of the clerk’s duties that is not getting done,” Heather Adams, who is the acting CAO, told councillors at the committee of the whole meeting. She circulated a short written report just prior to the meeting.

Since Barb Wilson resigned without notice as clerk on Sept. 5, other staff has prepared agenda packages and minutes but background work is left undone, she said.

On Sept. 11, chief administrative officer, Larry Adams, director of finance and deputy CAO, David Carey, and director of human resources, Darcy Michaud, employment ended with the county. All were on non-disciplinary administrative leave for a time leading up to that date.

Adams has been unable to fill the position on a temporary basis, but just prior to the meeting she was approached by someone who may be suitable for the job in the short term.

“That would be a blessing to get us caught up, but I’m still recommending we proceed in order to have somebody permanent in place for the eventual arrival of the new CAO,” she said.

During discussion, Coun. Jim Ginn, who is the mayor of Central Huron, asked how important it would be for a CAO to do the hiring.

“It’s certainly the two positions that work extremely closely,” Adams said. “The dedication to doing the job correctly is usually what united people. A good CAO can work with whatever resources they’re given as long as the person’s doing their job.”

The clerk serves as council secretariat, recording all resolutions, decisions and proceedings of county council. The clerk provides administrative services to council, its committees and departments, and prepares and maintains the bylaws, minutes of meetings and agenda packages for the county.

Pray tell just how could our dedicated County Councillors allow our County to sink into this black abyss that is now associated directly with poor management at the level of elected representatives. Have County councillors of all stripes become so complacent and lax that they are unable to look after our own house!!
