Reporter’s notebook: AMDSB, Central Huron and Goderich council meetings

Goderich Town Council:

  • A dog park will stay just where it is beside the town’s water treatment plant, after nearly an hour of discussion at last night’s council meeting. “I’m astounded we’re here again,” said Coun. Michele Hansen during debate in a public meeting to consider other locations, such as a portion of the Maitland Woods behind the Knight’s of Columbus Centre. Council heard from local residents in favour and opposed to the dog park location that abuts a residential neighbourhood. A motion to create a small committee to explore other locations was rejected in a recorded vote of 4-3. The town will also realign the Warren Street extension into Southcove subdivision to a T-intersection instead of the planned S-shape in order to accommodate the dog park.

Central Huron Council:

  • A community group has collected nearly 500 names on a petition opposed to wind energy development in Central Huron. Local resident Peter Middleton and other members of Central Huron Against Turbines collected signatures in an on-going door-to-door campaign of those who will live in a project area planned for the former Goderich Twp. “I think the number 500 that they are approaching is quite significant. It’s roughly the amount of the people who vote for an average councillor in a municipal election,” said Coun. Burk Metzger. “I would hope that we would see a similar petition from the side supporting the development because they claim they’re the silent majority.”

Avon Maitland School Board:

  • The Board approved the tender from Lavis Contracting Co. Limited, of Clinton, for the John Street extension at Maitland River Elementary School at a cost of $586,500.62. The civil project is part of the overall school capital project. The Municipality of North Huron will contribute $150,000 toward the project. Three bids for the project were all within the board’s budgeted amount.
  • Two schools in Huron County that were closed as a result of accommodation reviews have been sold by auction. Deals will close Nov. 8 to sell Zurich Public School for $ 150,000 and
Blyth Public School for $ 210,000.
