Councillor calls for accessible water fountain at new arena

Bullet News CENTRAL HURON – Water from the fountain should be available at the new arena in Clinton, says a Central Huron councillor.

“We spend a lot of money making our water safe. Why don’t we drink it?” asked Coun. Burkhart Metzger at council last night. He said people using the arena and the fitness centre should have the choice of either fountain water or bottled water.

The newly opened Central Huron Community Complex does not have a water fountain in the lobby, although there is a filling station behind the players’ benches.

Some councillors thought there was a bylaw in place restricting the sale of bottled water in municipal buildings, but the municipality’s clerk, Brenda MacIsaac said the issue was sent to a committee back in 2009 and never made its way back to the council table. Since it was introduced under a previous council and no action was taken, it is considered to be null and void, she said.

The clerk is looking to Huron County’s health unit to see what regulations are in place with respect to water fountains, according to the minutes from a recent Committee of the Whole meeting.

CAO Kevin McLlwain said a water fountain could be installed in the main lobby if council would like to see one there.

The North Huron Wescast Community Complex has a water fountain plus a water bottle refill station on it. I’m not aware if they also sell bottled water, I don’t think they do.
