Sister city tours Goderich

Bullet News – Goderich is rekindling its relationship with sister city, Bay City, Mich.

In 1977, then-councillor Deb Shewfelt picked the community on the American shore of Lake Huron as a suitable sister city because of some similarities, including Blyth and Huron as local names. Like most relationships, years and circumstances have caused them to grow distant, but the tornado is bringing them back to together.

“We’re trying to revive it,” said Mayor Deb Shewfelt.

On Friday, two students and a teacher from the city’s high school toured the town with members from GDCI’s student council and handed over a cheque for $660, which was raised in school classrooms.

The city of 35,000 is located about 160 km north of Detroit. Representatives from Goderich typically attend its St. Patrick’s Day festivities, and most recently politicians from Bay City visited around the time of the Celtic Festival.
