Great Storm of 1913 will be remembered on both sides of the border

greatstorm2HURON COUNTY – Historians in communities along the Great Lakes are preparing for the 100th anniversary of the Great Storm of 1913, the “white hurricane” that sank 19 ships and killed more than 260 people.

Local plans for films and lectures, marine entertainment, job fair, theatre performance and church services are under way during the months leading up to the event, and during a special weekend, Nov. 8 to 10.

On the other side of the border, the Cranbrook Institute of Science and the Port Huron Museum are working together to create an exhibit.

“Port Huron was essentially ground zero during the storm, so it is definitely important to us on a local level,” Susan Bennett, who is curator of the Port Huron Museum, told the Great Lakes Echo.
