AMGH Foundation wraps up Keeping Abreast campaign

GODERICH – A $550,000 campaign by the Alexandra Marine and General Hospital Foundation to raise funds for a tool used for early breast cancer detection has wrapped up.

The Keeping Abreast Full-Field Digital Mammography Campaign ended with a generous donation from Lifestyle Oasis Residences that tipped it over the top.

The Keeping Abreast campaign was designed to raise funds for a new full-field digital mammography unit for the AMGH. With digital mammography, low energy X-rays pass through the breast exactly like conventional mammograms but are recorded by an electronic digital detector so that high resolution images can be displayed on a video monitor or printed onto film.

The campaign also centered on encouraging women to be proactive about their breast health and to encourage breast screening.  The unit has been in operation since November 2011.

The Campaign was launched directly on the heels of the very successful $5-million CT Scanner project.

“With all of the challenges that Goderich and Huron County have experienced over the last several years, this is a remarkable accomplishment.  Thank-you seems like such a little word when I see so much generosity,” said Heather Glenister, who is the foundation’s executive director.

“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to personally thank our donors for their continued support.  We were able to purchase this up-to date-equipment because of their generosity.  Our volunteers also played an important role in ensuring that we reached our goal. We would like to thank them for their assistance,” she said.

The community is still encouraged to donate to the mammography suite. The funds will be used to enhance the mammography suite.
