Bullet News ASHFIELD-COLBORNE-WAWANOSH – It took a community to refurbish three gates to the Colborne Cemetery.
The grand pillars at the entrance to the cemetery in the former Colborne Twp. were restored to resemble cut stone blocks, and the fencing was sandblasted and repainted, after a volunteer committee raised the majority of funds for the work reccently.
“It is really an asset to the community when people in the community are willing to put forth this much effort,” said Barry Million, who is a councillor in the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh, during the annual Colborne Cemetery Memorial Service.
Keith and Jo-Anne Homan led a committee during Colborne Twp.’s 175th Anniversary celebrations last year, with $9,500 for the gates’ work coming from a tour of Ridge House, their historic home, and the sale of Keith’s book, A History of the Ridge. ACW Council topped up the fund-raising efforts.
Jo-Anne came to the memorial service dressed as the character of Elizabeth Attrill, who once lived in the Ridge House. Elizabeth’s father, American Henry Attrill, had the first salt mines dug in Goderich in the 1870s and was also responsible for the transformation of the original log house into a Victorian mansion, including tower, turrets and gingerbread trim.
After the memorial service, Jo-Anne remained in period costume for the book launch of Paul Carroll’s The “Tiger”: Soldier, Engineer and Army Surgeon, held at Tiger Dunlop’s Tomb. She was joined by Dr. William “Tiger” Dunlop (Rob Bundy) and Baron Vincent de Tuyle (Keith Homan.)
The 140-page book is built around Recollection of the American War, written by Tiger in 1846 and first published in Montreal’s Literary Garland a year later. Carroll has added annotations, commentary, photos, maps, and a brief biography.

Even though I was unable to attend, the reverberations from the launch of The Tiger echoed far and wide up the Valley of the Maitland. Well done, Paul, and please say hello to the Baron and to Ms. Atrill. The Tiger, the old rascal, may have seen the coming of the Colborne Clique that wreaked havoc with the Canada Company.
