Weekend roundup of Huron County events

HURON COUNTY – The holiday season is gearing up, with a number of events across the county. While you’re out and about, take time to relax with a stop at any number of cafes, bistros, restaurants and pubs in the towns and villages.

Here’s a sampling of events:

Friday

Candlelight Dedication and Lighting of the Angel Tree, Goderich

Date: Friday, Nov. 16, starting at 7 p.m.

Location: Lion’s Harbour Park, beside the Park House Restaurant on West Street

Description: Candlelit procession to the Angel Tree, the MADD Tree and the Alzheimer Tree. The ministerial association will lead in prayer, with music by Mary Smith. A list of names of children who have died through the year, and people who were killed or injured by drunk drivers during the year will be read during the ceremony. Hot chocolate and cider will be served.

Saturday

Hansen’s Independant Fund-raising Day, Exeter

Date: Saturday, Nov. 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: Hansen’s Your Independent Grocer, 62 Thames Rd. E.

Description: The music students of SHDHS and Habitat students are taking over Hansen’s to help raise some funds for their trip in May.  Busking in the aisles, barbecue, and lots of live music.

Dance-A-Thon Marathon, Blyth

Date: Saturday, Nov. 17, from noon to midnight

Location: Blyth Memorial Hall

Description: Featuring dancers from the Blyth East Side Dance Studio. Dancing demonstrations held throughout the event. Drop in and dance with a pro, no sponsor sheet needed, Silent auction, noon – 8 p.m. Everyone welcome – refreshments and food available. Proceeds to the Blyth Legion Building Fund.

Santa Claus Parade, Goderich

Date: Saturday, Dec. 17, starting at 7:15 p.m.

Location: The parade route begins at Wellington and West Street then heads up to The Square, where it will circle in a clockwise direction – the opposite direction that traffic usually travels on The Square – to South Street. The parade ends at South and Elgin streets.

Description: More than 70 floats in celebration of Heart Lights – The Spirit of Goderich Shines Bright. Please bring a canned good for the food bank. There will be seasonal music by the Laketown Band starting at 6:20 p.m. in Lions Harbour Park. The lights are turned on at the ceremony, which welcomes everyone to the Festival of Lights at 6:50 p.m. The 4th Goderich Scouts will serve hot chocolate, courtesy of Tim Horton’s.

Handel’s Messiah, Goderich

Date: Saturday, Nov. 17, starting at 7:30 p.m.

Location: United Churches of Goderich, 56 North St.

Description: The Georgetown Bach Chorale under the direction of Ron Greidanus will perform Handel’s most beloved oratorio Messiah. In this musical feast, with two harpsichords, Baroque organ, period strings –including viola da gamba –and transcendental choral and solo work,

the Bach Chorale creates an evening designed to make Advent complete. Tickets: General admission, $25; Students, $10. Tickets available at Radiant Life Book Store.

Blyth Lighting of the Lights, Blyth

Date: Saturday, Nov. 17, starting at 7 p.m.

Location: Blyth Memorial Hall

Description: Come watch the festive annual event of the tree lighting for the holiday season.

Kintail School Flea Market, Kintail

Date: Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: Hwy. 21 north of Kintail on west side of road

Description: Browse through a vast array of treasures in the unique setting of former school SS#3 Ashfield. Enjoy a taste of good country-style cooking in the kitchen.

SUNDAY

St. James Soup and Sweets Luncheon, Middleton

Date: Sunday, Nov. 18, starting at noon

Location: St. James Anglican Church, corner of Bayfield Road at Tipperary Line, Middleton

Description: St. James is hosting its annual soup luncheon to benefit the Huron County Christmas Bureau outreach. Freewill offering to benefit the Huron County Christmas Bureau. Our Motto-Why cook? Sunday is a day of rest.
