Three-alarm blaze causes more than $600,000 damage in Bluewater

Bullet News BLUEWATER – A three-alarm fire caused more than $600,000 damages at a property south of Bayfield on Bluewater Hwy. last night.

The Bayfield Fire Dept., with assistance from the Zurich Fire Dept. and the water truck from the Brucefield Fire Dept., was called to battle a blaze in an outbuilding that’s used by Joe Durand Construction and for storage of vehicles and watercrafts.

Fire fighters used a high-hoe to control hot spots on the roof and remove steel cladding from the collapsed walls to help extinguish the blaze. They worked through the night and were on scene until about 4:30 a.m.

According to protocol when damages exceed a half-million dollars, the fire marshal’s office was called in to investigate. Investigators were on scene today, but the extent of the damage makes it likely the cause won’t be determined, said Dave Johnston, who is the fire chief for the Municipality of Bluewater.

He praised the volunteer fire fighters for their work.

“The fire departments should be commended in their efforts of protecting the nearby residence that was in close proximity to the fire,” he said.

The house lies to the north, just across the laneway from the outbuilding.
