HITMAN SCAM

MORRIS-TURNBERRY – Huron OPP officers received a report of a common scam that was popular a few years ago and has recently resurfaced.

A resident from Morris-Turnberry received an email from a scammer purporting to be an assassin.  The generic email was titled, “ASSASSIN: I’VE BEEN PAID TO KILL YOU.”  The sender stated he was an assassin from China and was assigned to kill the recipient.  He would carry out the mission unless he was paid double the amount.  The recipient of the email recognized this email to be a scam and promptly reported the matter to police.

This scam, and similar ones, rely on fear and the hopes you will not report the matter.  The scammer will also always request the email to be kept in strict confidence otherwise your life will be in danger.  Commonly these emails will contain several spelling and grammar mistakes.  The email will often be sent in a generic fashion from an unfamiliar email address.

If you receive a similar email do not respond to the sender, please report the matter to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online.  In addition, you can contact the Huron OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
