Weekend roundup

HURON COUNTY – Summer holidays are just around the corner and the tourism industry is ready. Tonight marks opening night at the Blyth Festival with the world premiere of Dear Johnny Deere and the Huron Country Playhouse closes the run of its first production, The Wizard of Oz, tomorrow night.

Across the county, the summer harvest is popping up at local farmers’ markets, outdoor celebrations abound, and music is the order of the day at all sorts of venues.

Here is a sampling of things to do this weekend:

Friday

Brussels Farmers’ Market, Brussels

Date: Friday, June 22, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays through to Oct. 5

Location: Historic downtown Brussels across from the Post Office and beside the LCBO.

Fresh produce, preserves, jams & jellies, organic meats, perogies, baking, plants, flowers, wood products, live food stations, and much more. Artisans crafts as well. Live entertainment.

Rotary Youth School’s Out Dance, Goderich

Date: Friday, June 22, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Location: Goderich Memorial Arena, 180 McDonald St.

For Grade 6, 7 and 8 students. Adult supervision by members of the Goderich Rotary Club. Refreshments and snacks available. Cost, $5. Proceeds to Rotary Skateboard Project

Strawberry Summerfest, Lucknow

Date: Friday, June 22 through Sunday, June 24

Location: Various

Friday – Soccer Tournament and Entertainment featuring Three Engine Train. Saturday – road hockey, kids activities, mule andhorse tour, talent show, dance featuring Diane Ryder Band. Sunday – community church service and barbecue. For more information, visit www.strawberrysummerfest.com

2012 Bayfield Writers’ Festival, Bayfield

Date: Saturday, June 23, starting at 1 p.m.

Location: Bayfield United Church, 6 The Square

Featuring – Hugh Brewster:  RMS Titanic:  Gilded Lives, Fatal Voyage; Cathy Buchanan:  The Day the Falls Stood Still; Stephen Marche:  How Shakespeare Changed Everything; John Lawrence Reynolds:  Beach Strip; Andrew Westoll:  The Chimps of Fauna Sanctuary. Blyth Public School Celebration

Date: Saturday, June 23 and Sunday, June 24

Location: Various

Saturday – open house at 1 p.m. at the school, Lions barbecue supper at 5 p.m. and community talent show at 8 p.m. at the Blyth Arena. Sunday – Legion breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at Memorial Hall, community church service at 11 a.m. at the school, with memory garden celebration and butterfly release at 2 p.m. at Blyth Memorial Garden.

Farmers’ Market, Dungannon

Date: Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Location: Dungannon Agricultural Hall

Fresh local produce and baking, plants, used books and canned preservatives.

BIA Farmers’ Market, Goderich

Date: Saturday, June 23, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Location: Downtown Square

Check out the fresh produce, baked goods, plants and crafts at the BIA Farmers’ Market in its new format in downtown Goderich. The space
used will be the periphery of Courthouse Square, encompassing the angle parking spaces and sidewalk promenade, with vending toward the sidewalk and storefronts. The sections of The Square used for the Farmers’ Market will be from South Street corner, around counter clockwise to Hamilton Street.

DPI Photography Exhibit, Goderich

Date: Saturday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday by chance. Until June 27.

Location: Elizabeth’s Art Gallery, 54 The Square

8th Annual Exhibit of the Digital Photo Image group that meets at Elizabeth’s Art Gallery. See all the possibilities of digital photography and digital printing.

Global Games Day, Goderich

Date: Saturday June 23, from 1 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Location: 230 Harbour Lane, near the Marine Museum at main beach area in Goderich

Team tug o war, around-the-world tour of music on stage, fun for the children, dance, artisans, outdoor games, international grill and beer, and First Nations crafts (costs apply for crafts). Admission free.

Annual Flower Show, Goderich

Date: Saturday, June 23, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: MacKay Centre for Seniors, 10 Nelson St.

Join with the Goderich and District Horticultural Society for their Annual Flower Show.

Sunday

First Class Luncheon, Bayfield

Date: Sunday, June 24, starting at 12:30 p.m.

Location: Little Inn of Bayfield, 26 Main St. N.

Featuring Hugh Brewster, author of RMS Titanic:  Gilded Lives, Fatal Voyage. Tickets, $35, available at The Village Bookshop.

Big Bike Ride and Race Day, Clinton

Date: Sunday, June 24 starting at 12:30 p.m.

Location: Clinton Raceway, Beech Street

Watch some of the finest pacers and trotters in Southwestern Ontario compete for a share of purse money. Before the 1:30 p.m. post-time, watch the fun of the Big Bike for Heart and Stroke Association. Walter Gretzky, father of former professional hockey player Wayne Gretzky, will hop aboard the Big Bike and will sign autographs trackside from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. A mass CPR course for anyone interested will begin at approximately 3 p.m.

Flea Market, Goderich

Date: Sunday, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Location: Downtown Square

Sunday Concerts, Goderich

Date: Sunday, June 24, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Location: Lions Harbour Park, 168 West St.

Bring your lawn chair or blanket to beautiful Harbour Park every Sunday evening throughout the summer and enjoy a variety of live bands as you watch the sun go down. Cost: Freewill. Brought to you by Goderich Laketown Band. This week’s feature: Waterloo Band.
