Bowmanville, home of the Bowmanville Zoo and Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, was chosen over Goderich, Oshawa, Smith Falls, and St. Thomas.
Financial expert and winner of The Ultimate W Expert Challenge, Preet Banerjee will host the series of 10 60-minute shows, along with returning co-host Dr. Joti Samra, Corus Entertainment’s OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network (Canada) announced recently.
Season 1 saw the town of Aldergrove, B.C. reach their $1-million goal.
In the series, 100 families have 10 weeks to raise their collective net worth by $1 million. In each episode, neighbours take on a community challenge and an individual challenge. They dig deep, downsize, earn, barter, share, swap, scrimp, save and collaborate with their neighbours in ways they never would have imagined. If all 100 families in the community can do it, they will become a Million Dollar Neighbourhood. To raise the stakes even higher, if the community makes their $1 million goal, they’ll choose one family to win the life-changing sum of $100,000.
Goderich residents Richard and Rose Stewart were spear-heading an effort to have Goderich featured on the show. They launched a Facebook site and invited townspeople to show the production company “what we’re all about and let them see the true spirit of the community.” Membership climbed to 2,100 with people posting pictures and memories of Goderich, like the Disney parade on Labour Day Weekend in 1999 and a song by Dale Matthies entitled Goderich that was written three years ago and performed at North Street United Church recently.
Produced by Force Four Entertainment Inc. in association with OWN (Canada), Season 2 of Million Dollar Neighbourhood is scheduled to launch Jan. 2013.
