HURON COUNTY – We’re headed into the dog days of summer, according to Environment Canada, which is just perfect for lazily tripping through Huron County’s countryside, towns and villages. Wherever you go, it’s just a short drive to the lake, a public pool, or an air-conditioned shop or eatery.

Friday
Library Book Sale, Exeter
Date: Friday, July 13 until 5 p.m.; Saturday, July 14, from noon to 5 p.m.
Location: Exeter Branch Library, 330 Main Street
Bargains galore. Bring your own bag. Proceeds support the Friends of the Library.
Brussels Farmers’ Market, Brussels
Date: Friday, July 13, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Fridays through to Oct. 5
Location: Historic downtown Brussels across from the Post Office and beside the LCBO.
Fresh produce, preserves, jams & jellies, organic meats, perogies, baking, plants, flowers, wood products, live food stations, and much more. Artisans crafts as well. Live entertainment.
Goderich Kinsmen Summerfest
Date: Until Saturday, July 14, noon to 1 a.m. daily
Location: Marine Museum Park, beachfront of Goderich
This annual event to raise funds for community projects features a refreshment tent with entertainment, games for adults and youth, talent search, sand-castle building contest for kids, carnival and midway, and plenty more. Friday night entertainment: Three Engine Train and Full Nelsons. Saturday night entertainment: Third Wave. Full schedule available online.
Piping Down the Sun, Goderich

Join the Celtic Blue Highlanders Pipe Band every Friday evening, one hour before sunset, until Aug. 24 as they “pipe down the sun.”

Family Fishing Derby, Benmiller
Date: Saturday, July 14, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Location: Benmiller Falls Reserve
Take part in Family Fishing Week with a day with the family at the stocked pond. Bring your fishing equipment or make use of equipment available. Prize awards for size categories and tagged fish caught. Barbecue lunch and more. Park admission, derby registration.
Blyth Buskerfest 2012, Blyth

Location: Downtown
The main street in Blyth will be closed through the day for this show of street talent. Pony rides and petting zoo just north of Bainton’s Old Mill.
Farmers’ Market, Dungannon
Date: Saturday, July 14 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Location: Dungannon Agricultural Hall
Fresh local produce and baking, plants, used books and canned preservatives.
BIA Farmers’ Market, Goderich
Date: Saturday, July 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location: Downtown Square
Check out the fresh produce, baked goods, plants and crafts at the BIA Farmers’ Market in its new format in downtown Goderich. The space used will be the periphery of Courthouse Square, encompassing the angle parking spaces and sidewalk promenade, with vending toward the sidewalk and storefronts. The sections of The Square used for the Farmers’ Market will be from South Street corner, around counter clockwise to Hamilton Street.
Undiscovered Garden Tour, locations in Huron and Perth counties
Date: Saturday, July 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This first tour boasts 15 gardens on display in both town and country in the areas of Wingham, Gowanstown, Gorrie, Wroxeter, Walton, Blyth, Auburn, Goderich, Bayfield, Zurich and St. Joseph. Nearby CovenTree Gardens, Huron Ridge Acres and Brentwood on the Beach are all featured on the tour. Donations to Huron Perth Garden Tours would be appreciated. Kintail School Flea Market, Kintail

Clinton Raceway, Clinton
Date: Sunday, July 15, post time at 1:30 p.m.
Come watch trotters and pacers compete for purses on a half-mile track through the summer months. This Sunday is Kids Day at the races, in support of the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign. Admission by donation for rides, games, face painting, dunk tank, zumba, touch a horse and more.
